Virgin Olive Oil vs Regular: New Study Links Gut Microbiome to Brain Health
A new study shows that not all olive oils are equal. Virgin olive oil is linked to better cognitive function in older adults, potentially through changes in gut microbiota, while refined olive oil may have the opposite effect.
A new study published in Microbiome journal reveals that the type of olive oil you consume may significantly influence brain health through the gut–brain axis.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 650 older adults at risk of cognitive decline and found that higher intake of virgin olive oil was associated with improvements in cognitive performance. In contrast, consumption of common or refined olive oil was linked to worsening cognitive outcomes over time.

Not all olive oils behave the same
Olive oil is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, long associated with healthy aging. However, this study highlights an important distinction: quality matters.
Participants who consumed more virgin olive oil showed better performance across multiple cognitive domains, including executive function and language. Meanwhile, those consuming higher amounts of refined olive oil experienced declines in these same areas.
This suggests that processing methods may alter the biological effects of olive oil, potentially removing beneficial compounds such as polyphenols.
The gut–brain connection
The most compelling aspect of the study lies in its mechanistic insight. Researchers found that gut microbiota composition partially mediated the relationship between olive oil intake and cognitive function.
Higher intake of virgin olive oil was associated with greater microbial diversity, a hallmark of gut health. Specific bacterial taxa, such as Adlercreutzia, were linked to cognitive changes, suggesting a biological pathway connecting diet, microbiome, and brain function.
This reinforces the concept of the “gut–brain axis,” where intestinal microbes influence neurological processes, including cognition and behavior.

A potential strategy for healthy brain aging
The findings support the idea that dietary interventions targeting the microbiome could help preserve cognitive function in aging populations.
However, researchers caution that the study is observational, meaning it cannot prove causation. More controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm whether switching to virgin olive oil directly improves brain health.
Still, the results point to a simple and accessible strategy: improving fat quality in the diet may have meaningful effects on long-term cognitive health.
Why This Matters for GeneFit Readers
This study directly aligns with GeneFit’s core philosophy: metabolism, gut health, and brain function are deeply interconnected.
For GeneFit clinics and clients, the takeaway is actionable. Nutritional programming should not just focus on macronutrients or calories but also on food quality and bioactive compounds. Virgin olive oil can be positioned as a functional fat that supports both metabolic and cognitive health.
This also opens opportunities for personalized interventions. Microbiome profiling combined with targeted dietary strategies could become a powerful tool for preventing cognitive decline and optimizing long-term health outcomes.
